On Women's International Day Genesis Foundation acknowledges all those women who improve education.

Marta is a teacher at CEDEPRO, a public school in Medellin, located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood that is affected by the armed conflict. Some students showed signs of aggressive behavior and a lack of discipline and she had difficulties maintaining the students’ attention and motivation while teaching Math, Spanish, and Social Sciences.

Since 2009 the program Learning to Learn was introduced as a playful and innovative pedagogical program that provides quality education by improving teaching skills and by strengthening the thinking and reasoning processes of students. Marta as well as 4 other teachers were curious about the program, but also worried about the extra time it demanded.

The training team easily established a strong working relationship with the group of teachers.  Marta and her colleagues realized that Learning to Learn is not simply a set of toys and manuals for students, but rather it seeks to change the way teachers teach through the use of a playful methodology and the appropriation of theoretical knowledge of thinking and reasoning in children.

With the introduction of the program and the use of toys with a pedagogical purpose, Marta started to see positive changes developing in her classroom.  Her students had a better attitude towards learning, and the use of toys creates a nontraditional learning-teaching environment and allowed the children to create and participate actively in their learning process. The general classroom atmosphere changed and conflicts decreased which enabled Marta to establish better relationships with her students through innovative strategies and tools, and to improve her pedagogical skills.

Genesis accomplishments in 2011

We are very proud to share with you our great accomplishments of 2011. In an effort to continue our mission of enhancing quality of education in the most vulnerable communities in Colombia, we invested a total of US$1,343,489  in 21 projects nation wide. We increased our coverage from over 79,000 students the previous year to 168,000 students in 2011 due to the expansion and replication of our models.

We once again would like to thank all who support our work, and in this way help thousands of children achieve their dreams through education!

Implementation of the model Juventud Rural may start in 150 educational institutions in the country in 2012

In 2011, the model Juventud Rural, Educación y Desarrollo Rural was reviewed and adjusted in alliance with the Ministry of Education, Fundacion Manuel Mejía, Oxy and Fundacion El Alcaraván. Based on the results and in alliance with the same partners, it is highly probable that we may initiate the implementation of the model in 2012 in 150 high school institutions located in rural and urban-marginal areas in 14 departments (states) of the country. The project will  prioritize educational needs especially in border areas, indigenous communities and  in those regions with the highest drop-out rates and number of children who are out of the educational system.
